The verdict is not surprising.

It was believed the Russian government was not going to agree to a swap until first hearing a verdict.

Now the two sides can really start to negotiate a prisoner swap to secure the release of Griner and fellow American detainee Paul Whelan.

A Russian judge has found Brittney Griner guilty in her drug trial.

The WNBA star, who has been detained in a Moscow jail since her arrest for possession of cannabis oil in February, received a sentence of nine years in prison and a fine. Griner had pleaded guilty and apologized for making an innocent mistake. She says she accidentally packed vape cartridges in her luggage when she traveled to Moscow. Her case received worldwide attention and the U.S. government declared she is being wrongfully detained and used as a political pawn. The State Department has been trying to secure her release by offering Russia a prisoner swap. (Fox News)
