Mayor Supports Alternative Water Group

(Toledo, OH) A new northwest Ohio water commission will be unveiled today.

Toledo's mayor will show off an alternative to the Toledo Area Water Authority proposed by several suburban communities.  The mayor's plan would allow the city to maintain control of the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant, but give each partner a voice in setting rates and water system investments.

Some suburban officials say they're disappointed in the plan after spending the past year negotiating creation of the water authority. Most of the opposition comes because Toledo City Council would have final say over water rates, with veto power over what the regional authority decides.

Toledoans still would likely have to vote on a city charter change in November to allow the new Regional Water Commission to move forward.
