PIB Police Officer Cleared on Appeal

(Toledo, OH) An Ohio appeals court throws out criminal charges against a former Put-in-Bay police officer.

Former Sergeant Steve Korossy faced 14 counts of illegally accessing a statewide law enforcement database, but a three-judge panel from the Toledo-based Sixth District Court of Appeals vacated every one of those charges.

The appeals court found an Ottawa County judge erred in finding the former Put-in-Bay police sergeant guilty without explaining the circumstances for the charges.

Korossy was indicted more than two years ago, but later accepted a plea deal with the state attorney general's office, which was investigating the entire island police force. Korossy checked his own background, ran two checks on orders from the police chief, did another for a police I.D. card for a fellow officer, and checked ownership a suspicious vehicle. He was sentenced to 150 days behind bars.

Korossy called it a politically-motivated case. The attorney general's office called the appeals court decision based a 'procedural error.'
